Morels anyone?

It’s spring time on Needle Eye Mountain! The wild red buds and dogwoods are in full bloom and when they bloom… out come the morel mushrooms!

I haven’t posted since we finished the house. I figured we had finished our journey… but…I’ve had so many folks ask “where’s the blog? I miss seeing what is happening on the mountain.” So…. Welcome to taming needle eye mountain parts two.

The mountain is greening up

Getting adjusted to the mountain comes in waves. Sometimes it’s so busy you just plop down at night and fall asleep…. and other times… I’m thinking what on earth can I get myself into today?

Today… with Kate here for the weekend… we hiked up the mountain in search of morels. Those little guys blend right into the landscape and then boom you see one and it stands out like a turd in a punch bowl. (Okay that’s gross but you get the point).

Funny part of the hunt was that Guinea joined us. She walked just behind us making sure we were looking in all the right places.

So morels, once you find one.. it gets a little easier to see the next one and then lo and behold… we had enough for dinner.

Guinea is just over Kate’s shoulder

Dinner was steak, mushrooms, mashed potatoes and asparagus! Yum…

Now for the debate of the evening… what is the best way to prepare morel mushrooms? We couldn’t agree so we cooked to batches. Scott’s – with just butter, salt and pepper. Mine- minced onion, garlic, white wine, fresh thyme with butter salt and pepper … the winner…. BOTH. You just can’t beat fresh picked shrooms.

So if we picked the right ones I’ll join you again for the next blog if not… they weren’t Morels 😂

  1. wow! Love Morels! Third choice is to sauté in a little olio and butter mix. Then add heavy cream and cook down as a reduction. Over your grilled fillets! The best!!!
